When a crew of volunteers from the Jewish Pavilion visited Eastbrooke Gardens for an Ice cream Social, one of the residents asked Gloria Newberger “What is your name”” Gloria replied “My name is Gloria, what is your name?” The resident responded “Honestly, I have no idea!”
While this sounds like a punch line to a joke, Alzheimer’s disease is real. It isn’t funny, and it affects 10% of our elderly population. While many of the residents of Eastbrooke Gardens are “sweet and pleasantly confused”, the residents are still people who deserve kindness and excellent care.
Jewish Pavilion staff and volunteers ensure tat our seniors are not forgotten. The volunteers were amazed at how well the residents responded to our conversation. When the music, led my Marge Dreayer, began, they belted out the words to the songs.
Our rabbis explain that we are all created in God’s image. Surely everyone is entitled to compassion and companionship.
