Neighborhood respite care is a program designed to provide relief for caregivers who have total responsibility for a loved one living at home. The program provides quality activities and supportive services for older adults with physical and/or memory impairments. During the time clients are being cared for at a respite site, caregivers have the opportunity to run errands, go out to lunch, or just relax for a few hours knowing all the while that their loved ones are well cared for and safe. We welcome new volunteer involvement. Please contact Cathy Swerdlow at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information on how you can participate.
Management: Oversight and staffing of the program is provided by Share the Care™, Inc., a non-profit organization specializing in adult day care and respite care since 1986. The services offered through Share the Care™, Inc. can help family members postpone or avoid the expense and emotional turmoil associated with placing a loved one in a long-term-care environment.
Participants: All respite care participants must be ambulatory and require no more than a single person to assist in the restroom. Prospective clients receive an in-home assessment by a Share the Care™ manager and must meet all program criteria. Financial obligations are determined on a sliding fee schedule.
Programming: Participants are engaged in a variety of activities with the on-site Share the Care™ staff member such as exercise, crafts, games and music therapy, all at an appropriate level for enjoyment by the clients being served. In addition, Jewish Pavilion staff members and volunteers provide Jewish programming to both Jewish and non-Jewish program clients (all faiths are welcome). Many times, Jewish clientèle are unable to attend other religious programming offered by the community. For the non-Jewish participants, the Jewish programming is educational, a learning experience that broadens their knowledge about other religions and cultures. This is the only respite program in Central Florida which addresses the special religious, cultural, and dietary needs of the elderly in the Jewish community.
Food: Clients may bring their own lunches (dairy only) or purchase lunch for $5.00 from a café located on site. Kosher dietary laws are followed.
Location: The senior lounge in Jewish Community Center of Greater Orlando is the location of The Jewish Pavilion’s respite care programming site. The group meets every Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
