How to Prepare for a Flood, Fire, or Hurricane: What to Pack in an Emergency Go-Bag

If a natural disaster like a flood, fire, or hurricane forces you to leave your home quickly, having essential items ready to go can make a big difference in how easily you can recover. Store these items in a backpack or waterproof, zip-top bags to protect them from damage and ensure you're prepared.

1. Important Documents

Pack original or photocopied versions of your critical personal documents, including:

  • Social Security card

  • Passport

  • Birth certificates

  • Marriage license or divorce decrees

  • Estate planning documents (wills, power of attorney, etc.)

Keep in mind that some institutions may require original documents, so include those if possible.

2. Home Inventory

Record a video walkthrough of your home, narrating as you go. Include:

  • Every room

  • Closets and drawers

  • Personal belongings of value

This video will serve as documentation for insurance claims.

3. Cash

Have enough cash on hand to last a few days, in case ATMs or card readers aren’t working due to power outages.

4. Insurance and Financial Records

Bring copies of:

  • Homeowners, renters, auto, and health insurance policies

  • Bank account and brokerage statements

  • Credit card and retirement account statements

This helps you track your assets and file claims if needed.

5. Contacts and Communication

Prepare a printed list of important phone numbers, in case cell service is down or your phone is lost.

6. Other Essentials

Include the following in your emergency bag:

  • Batteries (and chargers if possible)

  • A list of current prescriptions

  • Any essential medications

Having these items ready can save time and reduce stress during a crisis.
