We miss our moms!!

This has been an especially challenging year for everyone, but even more so for our seniors in elder-care communities who have not received any physical contact in months. Touch and closeness help create a sense of comfort and well-being. Touch helps increase the level of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, which is called the “happiness hormone,” and oxytocin, a hormone involved in human bonding.

For staff and volunteers at the Jewish Pavilion, “touch is our secret ingredient” says Marlene Adler, Board Chair. “While our seniors adore their visits from volunteers, their Shabbat services, and holiday festivities, the thing that binds us together is the warm relationships we form. Hugs deepen that bond.”

We have spent the last few months focused on alternative ways to provide “virtual hugs”  and connect with our seniors, such as sending email and letters, making phone calls, providing face masks, holiday gift bags, and Zoom Shabbat services and sing- a-longs.

Not only have our seniors endured a lack of touch, but so have our staff and volunteers who look forward to the warm greetings they normally receive. The Jewish Pavilion is known for its incredibly dedicated group of donors and its wonderful social events. One third of the agency’s income comes from these events. This year, we have cancelled our Citrus Club Cocktail party, our golf tournament, our gala and JP Connections- all events we have perfected and counted on for years.

At our gala, we ask everyone to consider a gift of $118 to support the Jewish Pavilion and the Orlando Senior Help Desk. Instead, we now ask everyone to begin the New Year with their elders in mind, and consider a gift of $118 per person. All donors will be entered into a drawing to win a pair of diamond hoop earrings valued at $1500 from Addeo Jewelers. Your gift will enable us to continue to serve the increasing number of people who rely on our Orlando Senior Help Desk to navigate the changing world we live in as well as support all of our endeavors to connect with our seniors. Please consider a $118 or $236 gift to start off your year.
